ZWeather Shells clattered againt the sidewalk, echoing through the empty streets as bullet after bullet lodged within the undead creature. The sixth that had crossed my path today, a new record for this time of Fall. Normally, they only took one clean shot to the head to go down, but with my aim, it was best not to count on that. This was unfortunate, since my ammunition money was long gone, and today I was going through bullets quicker than ever.

After a moment of silence, Reginald spoke up, "What about us, man! We played by the rules, We didn't get in anybodies way, and now look at us! We won't make it through the day with the supplies we have left! How could they just leave us here like this? Thank God I brought this suicide pill-"

With all the contempt and disgust I could muster, I reared my arm back and slapped Reginald's hand, sending the red and white pill across the room.

"That pill cost fifteen hundred dollars!" Reginald cried as the pill flew into the distance.

It was my seventh grade school year. Like most children my age, I hated school. I went to a particularly terrible one at that, so anything closing in on intellectual stimulation was sparse. The lack of quality in late nineties Los Angeles public schools is another topic though. Needless to say, I tossed aside all thoughts of school the moment I walked through my door and tossed my backpack aside.

Myself, the world, the ocean, blue
Over the sea on which I float
The cold of the night, a black overcoat

The theme is inspiration. Mine starts out kind of dreary, but what is inspiration and hope without some adversity?

This poem went over a couple big redrafts before I found all the right words I wanted. When having to do something under a specific limit of words (this contest was 100 words or less, I clocked in at 94) it is really stifling at first, but after a few redrafts I noticed that I didn't need so many words to begin with. Such is the power of editing.

I am just one of about 40 entries, so this should be some stiff competition.
